My Students

Do you love art? I certainly do, but as a first grade teacher, one thing I hear on an everyday basis is “I can’t draw!” I personally believe that each person has an artist inside them, and this is why I decided to start an after school art enrichment club.

Our school is a high-poverty, Title-One school, and most students receive free or reduced price lunch.

Many of our students have difficult home lives. Despite this, they come to school with an enthusiasm and curiosity for learning that is astounding!

My Project

In order to start this club, I will need to purchase art supplies. Our school has very limited funding for classroom materials, and we have to spend our budget providing basic materials. The few supplies I have go toward my first grade class, so I would not have enough to provide supplies for both my class and the after school club.

Students in the art enrichment club will be exposed to new types of art, receive instruction on how to draw, work on their fine motor skills (which is something we do not get to practice enough in the course of a school day!), and build relationships with others in a warm and accepting environment.

Students will use the Reeves Watercolor Paint sets and Canson Artist Series Watercolor Book to learn how to use watercolor paint to express themselves through art, the Hygloss Ultimate Collage pack to learn about abstract art, and the Royal Super Value Sponge Sets to help them create underwater landscapes, and more!

My goal through establishing this art enrichment club is to build the confidence of every little student who wishes to participate. I want these children to know that each of them has an artist inside waiting to get out! Won’t you help me show these sweet little first and second graders that they CAN draw?
