My students need books for our Historical Fiction unit. The smaller sets allow student partnering that encourages greater understanding and variety for students.
"There is more treasure in books than all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island." (Walt Disney) I have a classroom of 27 students who are eager learners ready to connect their knowledge. Historical fiction opens their eyes to the past and connects history and reading to impact their learning.
My students are a group of 27 ten and eleven year old boys and girls.
They are fun, hard-working, eager learners.
Our school is located in a rural area with quite a bit of economic diversity. Twenty-two percent of our student population receives free and reduced lunches. Due to budgeting issues our resources, such as classroom books, are limited.
My Project
Students read historical fiction picture books, novels, and nonfiction texts and discuss them in book clubs. They pay attention to the details of the setting and notice shifts in time in their stories, keeping track of story events using story timelines and historical timelines side by side. They learn that characters are shaped by the times in which they live. Students pay close attention to descriptive passages and small details to build important ideas. They learn how to support each other in book club conversations and to be open to new ideas as they read and listen to ideas from others. Students learn how to experience a story through the perspective of secondary characters and pay close attention to the critical choices that characters make and what this says about human nature. They deepen their thinking by looking at books through the lens of power. They read relevant nonfiction alongside their historical fiction texts to learn more about the time period of their stories.
In the classroom we dedicate a good chunk of time to Historical Fiction because of the impact it has on student reading, understanding of historical events, and the connections they make to their own lives today.
Students celebrate by reflecting on their reading and learning and think about how they might live their lives differently. These conversations and understandings are crucial to their development as lifelong learners and future leaders. These books provide that opportunity for our kids.
