My students need a set of classroom dictionaries and a set of thesauruses to define the wonderful words we encounter when reading.

My Students

My students are from an impoverished area in rural Oklahoma, and most of them are from single-parent homes.

We are building a sense of togetherness and developing a strong work ethic that will continue far beyond the walls of this classroom. The students do not take much for granted because they often lack the kinds of necessities that many people don't even take time to consider. They cherish what they are given.

My Project

Students often read words that have unknown meanings and pronunciations. If I had this set of dictionaries and thesauruses, they could look up the words to add to their lexicon boxes whenever they encounter one. When I teach resource skills, I only have two student dictionaries and 1 thesaurus. If I had at least 10 of each, I could group students together and allow them to experience a dictionary as I am teaching the skills.

It is important to consider that here in rural Oklahoma, we don't have a rich vocabulary.

Students need to increase vocabulary skills to read and write effectively. Students add words to their lexicon boxes and begin to incorporate it into their daily lives. I have students who love to use a thesaurus when writing to make their prose more emotional, more vibrant, and most importantly their very own.
