My students need the 3Doodle pen, pad, and PLA filament to create 3D shapes that apply classroom knowledge to understand engineered structures used in society.
A typical day would involve students thinking deeply about the subject matter and apply their knowledge to solve challenges while working in teams. Students would thrive on more opportunities to engage in the engineering cycle (design, build, test, and improve) and actually produce 3D models.
The students are energetic and motivated.
Many are 1st generation, college bound students. Students live in a rural agricultural county in a rural state. Our high school has just separated from a regional school unit and started their own. We are a small school of about five hundred students and financial means are limited. We also are a high school with limited technology, and what we do have is outdated. All the science teachers are ready to embrace new technology to enhance their curriculum. The 3Doodler will help to do that. We are initially asking for one device but as opportunities avail themselves, we hope to be able to have at least one per team in most physical science classes. We are working to offer students more STEM experiences so that they will be inspired in school and also ready for the future.
My Project
We will be using the 3Doodler as part of the physics curriculum, as well as in a Projects in Engineering class to be started next year. Student teams will be asked to research and design various engineered structures, including bridges, tunnels, and dams to apply understanding of concepts of various forces, torque, strength to weight ratio, and other physical science concepts. The 3Doodler will be used to bring these structures to life by making 3D models of student designs. One 3Doodler will have to be shared by the teams until we can get more. Ideally, each group should have at least one.
The students will apply science, math, engineering, and technology skills for this project. By the end of the year, the students will not only have produced several 3D models of various engineered structures, but also will have gained experience in research, technical drawing, journaling, presentation skills, teamwork, and problem solving.
Without these donations, the project will not be offered to the students.
This project will engage students by helping them make the connection between what they learn in school and how it is used in the real world.
The 3Doodler and this project will make science fun and engaging for the student who is looking for more than just a book and worksheets. This innovative technology has the potential to excite students about science and its applications and offer them a way to test out ideas.
