I want my first graders to love learning. I want them to have access to the tools necessary to explore learning in a way that is meaningful to them. I want to create a classroom full of critical thinkers and innovative learners. I have a class of kids that are ready to take learning to the next step.
I have an amazing room of very diverse first grade students.
They are happy children who love coming to school. They are creative children who love to talk about the things they wonder about throughout the day. I have many students learning English as a second language, students with special needs, and students at various points on the autistic spectrum. My school is located in an area of rapid growth which changed the demographic make-up almost overnight. We doubled the percentage of students receiving assistance from the free and reduced lunch program in one year. Our families work hard to support their children. I want to make sure this year is full of learning that challenges them and helps solidify a foundation of 21st century learning skills upon which they will build for years to come. I want my kids to have fun learning!
My Project
With two iPads in our classroom, my students will have instant access to the information they need to engage them in their learning. These tools will also allow them to showcase their learning in ways that excite them and inspire others. We just started our Genius Hour "wonderings" and my kids are so excited to find the answers to their questions and share their knowledge with their classmates. Adding iPads to our classroom environment will allow them to do that and so much more. They can create a presentation to share their learning about decomposing numbers or collect, analyze and present data. Not only will my kids be gaining the 21st century learning skills they need, they will be able to create a learning environment that is meaningful to them. We can Skype with authors and discuss the book publishing process or find a class on the other side of the world to connect with and work alongside as we discuss problem solving strategies. The possibilities are truly endless!
Funding this project will allow my first graders to have access to the world at the touch of a button or the swipe of a screen.
It will change the way they are able to share their learning. It will engage them in their studies. It will allow us to research global issues and find ways to help solve problems. My students will gain the 21st century skills they need to build a solid foundation upon which to build. Funding this project will truly change the way we are able to learn in our classroom.
