My Students

In second grade, we introduce the scholars to the engineering design process and help them become confident and creative thinkers. I have 20 kids with a multitude of different personalities and needs! Each student requires different strategies, tools, and comfort levels to be successful.

Herman Miller states in their research that "Comfortable classrooms-physically and psychologically - promote a sense of well-being, keep minds focused, and limit distractions." I want to offer my students a choice of seating in my room to help foster active learning.

We are a second grade class at a Title I, STEM school in Texas, where our main focus is learning through engineering!

My Project

I am asking for 8 wobble chairs and 10 seat cushions for our classroom. These seats will be used as a part of a flexible seating design. They will also be used for individual students who have a hard time sitting still in their chairs during independent work time at their tables. I want our learning space to increase levels of engagement, foster active learning, and support the learning goals of my students. I want my students to be able to choose a seat that they feel the most comfortable in. If they are comfortable, they will be more focused. If they are focused, they will learn!

My classroom design influences levels of interaction and engagement.

Engagement and active learning improve retention. These alternative seats will allow my students to move freely and stay focused when it is most important.
