My students are devoted artists. My classroom is packed at lunch with students finishing up work, or starting early on the next project. My students always want more time in the classroom creating and more supplies to create spectacular art. They have a vision and need help reaching it.
I teach in a wonderful, albeit small, low-income district that primarily serves underprivileged students who will be first in their family to attend college.
We are trying to break that chain of poverty, and in order to do that we are building in more AP classes. My students come from very poor homes, and often have never had any art classes before.
I am offering AP Art for the first time ever this fall, and in order to do that, we need to have cameras. Unfortunately, I'm in a district with very little funding, and parents who cannot financially support this, so I am reaching out to you. My district has stepped up and provided us with the photo editing programs we need to use in class, but we currently do not have enough cameras.
My Project
We plan on using the cameras with camera bags, for projects in class and to photograph their portfolios for submission. Students will photograph their peers, other staff members here on campus, their family members, and enjoy a few small off-campus field trips to document the community.
Students will take pictures, and learn how to edit them in both Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom. The will have the opportunity to take both landscape and portrait pictures. The students will document their own work, as high quality photographs will showcase their fabulous drawn art and help improve the overall quality of their portfolio.
Most of my students are often the first in their family to graduate from high school.
Our school mission is to help them reach their dream of attending college. Currently, many of the universities and colleges my students are applying to are very competitive. I am so excited to offer AP Art this fall for the first time, and every AP class they take gives them an edge in getting into their dream college.
