"Experiment. Fail. Learn. Repeat." - Unknown. This epitomizes what is referred to as the maker movement.
The purpose of this campaign is to provide Fayston students with additional maker projects, opportunities to be creative and apply their learning in a way that is engaging and relevant.
Our elementary school is a rural school with approximately 100 students and is one of Vermont's smaller PreK to 6th schools.
We are currently in our second year of establishing our maker space. Through its use we have seen firsthand how our students thrive when given opportunities for hands-on, inquiry-based learning. As a rural school, students often feel disconnected from their neighbors. They lack access to the authentic learning opportunities commonly afforded to students in urban and more established communities. Our students need the chance to be the guides of their own learning. We believe our maker space along with the projects we hope to offer provide such an opportunity.
My Project
Our maker space is founded on a student-centered approach in which students are in the driver's seat. What they choose to work on, what they choose to make, is guided by their passions, interests and curiosities. Students are able to experiment with materials and new technology. Out of this exploration emerges new ideas and learning.
Our students have been clamoring for increased opportunities to use the maker space, particularly during the school day. Based on this feedback, our hope is to make the space available at multiple times each day, such as during lunch and recess. The space will be available for both guided projects and as an "open studio." The guided projects we hope to offer include Duct Tape Club, Jitterbug Robotics and Take Apart Art, all chosen based on student interest. Our goal is to offer projects that are available to all of our students, including those in the younger grades.
Through our maker space, students make meaningful connections with their learning.
We believe it provides an opportunity to engage all learners, including those less motivated in the traditional classroom setting. Our goal is to foster a culture of creativity and a passion for lifelong learning. We believe providing students with greater access to our maker space will help us to achieve this goal.
