My students need a class set of Life as we Knew it to complete their book study
My students need a class set of The Dead and Gone to complete their book study
The required standards that students are to learn in 6th grade science are great, however in our classroom we make them come alive! With a flipped classroom, the students have more time to actually apply their knowledge and see how these Earth Science standards relate to their life.
My students are amazing!
I have a very diverse set of students at our Title 1 school. My students are African American, Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian. All students come to my class to extend their knowledge in Science so that way they are better prepared to face the ever-changing world around them. With a growing population in our world and more problems arising every day, it is important to develop scientific thinking into our young learners and allow them a platform in order to solve our world problems. Who can we look to in order to solve our future problems if not our future leaders of science?
My Project
Students will be able to apply their knowledge from learning about the moon, tides, natural disasters, meteorology, astronomy, and safety precautions in order to analyze 'Life as We Knew it' and 'The Dead and Gone'. Although both stories are fictional, this engaging book allows students to use their prior knowledge in order to decipher if an event like this could actually occur and what would actually happen if an asteroid hit our moon.
This book specifically addressed the Georgia Performance Standards of S6E1., S6E2., S6E4., and S6E5.
Half of the class will read 'Life as we Knew it' which is a story told from a young girl's perspective and 'The Dead and Gone' which is the same story from a young boy's perspective from a different part of the world.
The basic science standards and required material that students are to learn in 6th grade Earth Science can seem bland and unexciting to students during some points of the year.
This book not only addressed the information learned from this year, but also expands upon it to allow students to use that knowledge to analyze if events like this could actually happen to them. These books would allow students to become excited about science and also work on their reading and comprehension skills.
