Empowering Students Through Art with Surrealist Elephants

My students need canvas, fabric, and decorative paper to create an art project based on the surrealist painting, The Elephants, after studying about India's culture.

My Students

As an art school, CJSA strives to "Empower Students Through Art". Arts education is frequently associated with higher student achievement, something I've experienced first hand in the last 4 years as a teacher at CJSA.

CJSA is a Title I school with a high number of socioeconomically disadvantaged students.

Many families have difficulty providing basic necessities for their children. Despite these difficulties, my students are eager to learn! They are motivated to achieve and find great joy during lessons where art is integrated into reading, math, or science.

My Project

Each May, our school holds an Art Walk. This family-friendly event displays art work throughout our school for all to see. Each grade level selects a different country to inspire their art. This year, the second grade is studying India. We'll each create a piece of art work based on our studies. In my class, I'll be focusing on the animals and their habitats in India. Our final project will be inspired by Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali. Though he's not from India, Dali is known for his painting "The Elephant". We'll begin by drawing an elephant with exceptionally long surreal legs, paint them gray, let dry, cut them out, and glue them onto a canvas. Here's where the fun begins... We'll use a green screen to take a photo of each child, making it look like they're in a Howdah. We'll print this out, place it on top of the elephant canvas, then decorate with the colorful paper, fabric, and rhinestones. Each child will look like they're riding in a Howdah atop a surrealist elephant!

A project like this could never happen without funding for the supplies.

For years, I've reached deep into my own pockets to fund high cost projects like this. Unfortunately, right now my family is struggling and I'm unable to pay for additional classroom supplies. My students deserve to enjoy art, regardless of its cost. My experience supports what research shows, the cognitive processes or habits that arts work fosters can support learning in other areas.
