My students only have access to laptops for social studies/science once a week (only on Mondays). It is great when we have the computers because the students can research, create presentations, and read other primary and secondary documents that relate to the topic being covered.
My students are 5th graders (72 total).
They are a great bunch of kids that have a true love of learning. Our school has a dynamic partnership with Montclair State University (MSU), our walking-distance neighbor. This unique collaboration affords many opportunities to share resources, facilities, and teaching and learning experiences among our 460 students, their teachers, MSU faculty, and MSU student teachers.
My Project
With only access to computers once a week, it can be a long wait to use one. Sometimes a student may just need a few minutes to look something up on the Internet for a research project. It sounds like the Chromebook is right for us. The Chromebook allows fast access to surf the Internet, and it has all of the Google apps already built in. Students could instantly create and share documents with Google Docs, create video projects with GoAnimate, explore another country with Google Maps, or watch an educational video on YouTube EDU. There are thousands of free educational apps available. Additionally, there is not much wait time on a Chromebook. They boot up in less than 10 seconds and resume instantly.
With a Chromebook, my students will have more access to technology in the classroom without the wait!
With this technology, and your support, our fifth graders can develop and strengthen their own passion for learning!
