Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Middle School Mariachi program that I direct, is a program full of discovery, expression, musicianship, and camaraderie. It's a community, school, and cultural tradition that the students take pride in.

The students in the Mariachi program are very talented and passionate individuals that come together, and perform in groups that often represent our school at campus and district events.

Our students achieve at high levels, despite challenges that they face on and off campus. We are a title one school, with a high percentage of Hispanic students, mostly of Mexican heritage, and our Mariachi performers take pride in communicating their culture to others through beautiful music. The one thing that I appreciate and respect the most, is how students in my classroom find their voices through the camaraderie and support of the other students in the program.

My Project

In the past our program has been supported by our Band and Orchestra programs on our campus. Now that these programs are growing, they are no longer able to offer us the materials that we have used in previous years. We are starting from scratch this year, and trying to establish our own inventory of music stands, classroom chairs, and instructional materials. The music stands that are requested in this proposal will be the first step in this process, and the students will use them everyday in class during rehearsals while learning new pieces of music. It is very important to me as a director to offer the students a professional rehearsal experience during class, with appropriate equipment.

If I am challenging the students to behave and play as professionals, they should have access to equipment that supports this idea. The maintenance of a classroom that promotes creativity, expression, collaboration, and professionalism is a priority for our program, and your generosity will contribute directly to this goal.
