Every morning we share how we can make the day an amazing one. It's hard to leave that circle and not feel inspired! First graders dream big and helping them reach for their dreams is my favorite part of teaching. With your help, we can add technology to help support their dreams.
My first graders are excited to discover new things.
At our school, fostering the love of learning is a core value. We love to give learners the opportunity to explore and discover the world around them. We look for ways for students to explore ideas and dig deeper into topics that interest and inspire them! Our school strives to give students what they need to be successful and persevere through challenges. In first grade, our learners enjoy the opportunities to observe and discover new things and are eager to share their learning with others.
My Project
First grade is a critical year for developing reading skills. It is the year where a learner goes from reading letters and sounds to being an independent reader. For a six year old, this can be a daunting task. In our classroom, we read in small groups, do word study and read on your own to foster those skills. These tasks can be tough for some learners. Recently I saw a student slide a skinny emergent reader into a thicker chapter book. He was hiding the text so others wouldn't see the low level book. On an iPad, no one can see! We would like to add an iPad station to our Reader's Workshop to support our new readers. At the station, learners could practice phonics, hear fluent reading and practice reading digital emergent texts! This would allow all students to read "just right" texts with pride. The best part is we can continue this same idea with our math workshop centers too. Learners could continue digital practice of math facts and concepts in a new and exciting way.
Technology is so engaging for all students.
Many students have the opportunity to use iPads or another tablet device when they are at home, but that is not true for all learners in my classroom. This donation would help support learners that do not have this opportunity at home. This support helps level the playing field- giving all students, regardless of income, an opportunity to use technology.
