Spanish Classes Connect to the World!

My students need an iPad, cover and screen shield to help them connect to the Spanish-speaking world outside of their classroom via online newspapers, audio/video and FaceTime to other classes.

My Students

My students have a weekly assignment to blog about what they watch, read, or listen to in Spanish, in addition to blogging about their class experience. As some don't have internet access at home, an iPad in class would be an easy way for them to connect to these media and engage the blogosphere.

I teach a diverse mix of students from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in a Title 1 school.

Our school has a lot of resources, but not every classroom has the same access. As a language class, I like to infuse my classes with authentic texts--things produced in Spanish for a Spanish-speaking audience--so I include a lot of news articles and videos in addition to poetry, literature, and art in order to help my students be able to communicate about things important to them and the Spanish-speaking world. My students are hungry to communicate in Spanish, and they have embraced the concept of blogging in Spanish to track their progress over the school year!

My Project

My students will be able to read online news articles, view web-based videos, and connect with other Spanish-speaking students and cultural icons via FaceTime with a class iPad. Additionally, they would be able to create content using the iLife suite that would enhance their language learning. Groups of students would contribute to the lesson by creating media content and presenting it to the class.

My students are social-media savvy, but I want to integrate technology into my classes so the students can also be savvy about how to engage authentic resources.

As they progress through their studies, I know that they will engage with other students, professors, authors, and other public figures through a variety of digital means, so I want them to be prepared--linguistically, socially, and technologically. Utilizing an iPad in class will help in those ways.
