Writer Henry Miller once wrote, "One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things." I want my students to be able to say the same. Language learning and travel abroad is an educational experience that changes lives, inspires global citizenship and fosters intercultural connections.
I am a Spanish teacher at an urban high school with a group of exceptionally bright and compassionate young men and women who are passionate about language learning.
I am co-leading a Spanish language and cultural immersion exchange with our sister school in Buenos Aires, Argentina for the school year.
In addition to our daily Spanish classes, we lead a bi-monthly seminar on Argentinean life, culture and history. In addition to learning about Argentina’s rich history and culture, we are connecting with students at Belgrano Day School in Buenos Aires. The cross-cultural exchange will culminate in a 10-day visit to Buenos Aires where the students will be living with local host families, taking cultural excursions throughout the city and surrounding areas, and taking conversation & culture classes, all to experience classroom learning firsthand
My Project
Language learning and international travel is an educational experience that changes lives, inspires global citizenship and fosters intercultural connections. As our world becomes increasingly smaller due to the rapid advances in communication, transportation and technology, it is essential that we prepare our students to not only be college ready, but world ready.
One of our greatest impediments to travel is the cost of airfare. We are working as a group to raise funds to offset the cost of airfare. To make international travel available to all of our students, regardless of background or economic status, we need outside support from those who understand the value of language learning and making cross-cultural connections for our students. Your help is one step in making our big dream come true. Helping us raise this portion of the funds needed for travel will solidify the relationship we want to build with both our sister school and the international community.
While your donation directly supports the students chosen for the exchange, its overall impact is much greater.
This cultural exchange will enrich the learning environment of all students at our school through shared photos, information sessions, and online blogs. This travel program will bring the Spanish language to life and create lasting global connections for my students.
