Mathematicians For Life!

My students need math manipulatives to explore various math concepts. Math literature is also a critical piece that will engage my students in math.

My Students

Mathematics is a struggle for a majority of students in my school. I want to inspire students to develop a love of math, because it is used in our everyday lives.

My students need to be challenged in math.

A majority of my students are in need of learning basic number sense. My elementary students LOVE reading and have a high interest in books. I want to incorporate reading into my math lessons to capture their attention. I feel after I "hook" them on a new math concept, they need math manipulatives for activities to practice the new concept. My students do well in mathematics when they use hands-on learning. We are a title one school and many students that I work with need to build the foundational skills in mathematics. With math literature and manipulatives, I feel my students will be more successful in mathematics!

My Project

My students will use the math literature books at an introduction to new math concepts. The books will be used for read aloud initially, but then placed throughout the room for students to read independently. After using the story as an introduction I will plan engaging math activities. Depending on the math concept we are focusing on it will be beneficial to have materials that students can manipulate to explore the concept. Early elementary students learn best from hands-on activities rather than worksheets.

My students will gradually increase their basic number sense and this will increase their math knowledge over time.

This donation will greatly improve the interest level of my students in mathematics which in turn will lead my students to be successful mathematicians.
