Book Club Kindles - Kids Want to Discuss the Same Book

My students need 11 Kindles for our book club. The kids want to read the same book to discuss it each month, and this is the most sensible way to give them their wish.

My Students

How do we let the students in our book club read the same book each month? Using the library funding to buy multiple paperback copies of the same book at our high school each month would reduce what the district could purchase to keep our library up to date for the students and cannot be justified.

They are kids who may never experience things that I took for granted growing up.

Books may be the only way they can experience things like visiting new places or experiencing different situations. They are children of poverty from a small town in Arkansas, and they love to read. We started our book club this year, but each member read a different book and explained a little bit to see if they could interest others in reading it. For the new year, the students wanted to see a change where everyone was reading the same book. They were immediately told it would not be possible, but I said I would work on ways to accomplish this for them. They are great kids, but they do not see where they have any control to make changes they think are simple. They asked, so I want to show them that when you think through a problem there is always some type of solution.

My Project

Every book will give them the opportunity to expand their minds and learn how to articulate and discuss them intelligently with one another. Common Core curriculum wants kids to read more. These children do not all have role models that teach them how to express themselves about different things appropriately. These discussions will help them learn how to appropriately disagree with someone, how to look at another person's perspective, and how to persuade someone else to see their point of view. Students get some of this in the classroom, but book club is their choice and passion. Instead of being told what they have to read, they can choose or vote on what they want to read. Showing the students that they have a say and that democracy works is crucial in our country.

Our school motto is, "Kids come first!" Help me show them that they do by granting their wish for our book club changes.

This is my first project through DonorsChoose.org, and I want to show both students and teachers that when we work together we can accomplish anything and succeed!
