My students need new science books, like the Inventors and Innovators Series and Computing and Connecting in the 21st Century Series, for our library. Our science books average nearly 20 years old! A good science collection should be no older than five years

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I loved science as a student. I would love to impart that same passion in my students, but it is so hard to do with books older than they are.
Our kids are 81% free lunch, plus nearly 4% reduced lunch.
Our building is over 100 years old, but the library is a little newer. The school and public libraries are often the only chance they have to find books, let alone interesting ones. We are struggling to increase our MCAS scores. The kids have so much drive and a deep willingness to learn, but so little resources and support beyond school doors. They flock to the city library after school to get a few more hours of library time in before they need to go home. Students with that much dedication deserve the very best that teachers and librarians can provide.
My Project
New science books are the start of an upward climb for my students. We've been working hard and the school library needs to be able to support the hard work that the students do. Our students struggle to graduate, given the climate that they come from. We are 85% low-income, and nearly 90% "high-needs."
By making the library collection better and newer, we can show the students that we believe in them and that they are worthy of success.
This is my first year as a school librarian and the collection has been neglected under a string of short-term librarians.
I want to make this collection something the students, teachers, and parents can be proud of. I want the students to succeed and go on to fantastic jobs and colleges. Without a good collection, where can they turn for homework, research, and just fun reading?
