Schools today are tasked with preparing students for a world that will not exist for another 15 years. Digital composition is the future of music. Allowing students to compose right now in a digital medium helps to prepare them for this future.
My students are a mix of ethnicity, social classes, and backgrounds.
They attend a high school that promotes student involvement and enrichment. We are in an area of West Virginia where they have limited access to culture and the opportunities that it can present developing youth. They are willing to try new activities, but like any student their age, they do not want to fail.
My Project
By donating to this project, you can help a student be exposed to a 21st Century way of composing music, developing ideas, and broadening their cultural experience. You can help them gain access to the iPad, where using GarageBand as well as other Digital Production Apps they can create a wide variety of music. You'll also help ensure continued use of the iPad by helping purchase a case and a protection plan to make sure it stays in use. You can help open a door to world and experiences they may not otherwise have ever thought about.
I have taught a course with these materials at another school.
Students who were involved in this course have gone on to join choir and/or band, gone into digital design in college, or have decided to pursue a career in music. This changed their entire perception of music and the arts in general; and best of all, it increased their respect and appreciation for the culture that music brings to our way of life.
