Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
You know what it's like when a new magazine comes in the mail. The cover draws you in. You turn the pages looking at the pictures, glancing at the captions, then go back to the article that caught your eye and you're hooked.
Our students are inner city immigrants adjusting to a new language and culture at the same time their parents are struggling to make it in a new world.
They are 90% native Spanish speakers and most are eligible for the free lunch program. Most parents have limited education. A high number of students have learning and/or behavior disorders. Like all students they are ready and eager to learn. They love coming to school, and are ready to be engaged. We are a Community School dedicated to providing services and support for the whole family to ensure students achieve academically. Once a week the Food Bank provides food to families.
My Project
Magazines are an ideal way to expose the children to the world today. The magazines provide pictures, captions, and stories to expand the student's understanding of current events. Our reading books are leveled to the student's ability. The magazines will be an ongoing source of high interest material for all students to share during reading, discussion and writing. They will relate stories they read to the topics they are studying.
Magazines provide a new medium through which the students can experience the world.
The articles provide real life examples of why what they are learning is school is important. Magazines offer reading, social studies, math, science, art and more. Most of all they are a fun, engaging way to learn.
