My students need 25 Math books to relate to Math concepts taught in class and fiction books to help with retelling. My students need book boxes to store books they choose.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
If we were lucky, we were read to often as children by our parents and teachers and were instilled with the love of reading. Our students often come to us lacking the knowledge and understanding of what reading can do for a person. It is my hope to be the one who helps instill that love of reading!
We are a Title 1 school in Texas.
Our school offers grades PreK-6th grade. Our school has a very transient student population. Often our students come to us with little to no background knowledge of things that most of us take for granted on a day-to-day basis. Our students come to school knowing that this will be the most consistent part of their day. Most of our students come from single-parent or immigrant families. We have a diverse student population, some of which are ESL (English as a second language) students.
My Project
For the majority of our students, books are something they only see or read at school. When we ask students who reads to them at home, often we get the response, "no one." Students will often ask me throughout the school year if they can take books home to read because they don't have any at home. The fiction books help students with their comprehension and the re-telling of a story. This is a very important concept in first grade. Students fall in love with reading through the fictional characters that are portrayed in these books. The Math books help reinforce Math concepts taught in class. Students read these books during independent Math stations that take place daily. Individual book boxes are used daily by the students during their Daily 5 Literacy stations. The students choose books on their independent reading level to place in these book boxes. This helps with a student's fluency and accuracy when re-reading books on an independent level.
Reading if a life long skill that everyone has a right to learn.
By having a rich library full of a variety of books, every student in my classroom will at least have the chance to learn that precious skill. These materials will give students a chance to practice their newly learned skill of reading, re-telling stories, reinforcing concepts taught in class, and give them a place to store all their precious books. All children deserve a chance to learn to read and ENJOY it!
