I teach at a school with a multicultural environment. This year I have students from Europe, Africa, Asia, North, and South America!
First graders are developing their literacy and language skills.
Listening centers are wonderful for modeling fluency and building oral vocabulary. This year, many of my students come from English as a second language backgrounds. I'm excited to help their English literacy take off! We are in need of a kid friendly listening center where students can hear all kind of literature read aloud to them.
Listening centers offer the ability to reach learners in both a auditory and visual way! It also allows for me to work in closely monitored guided reading groups, while students are able to collaborate and communicate with one another.
My Project
We use our literacy centers on a daily basis in first grade. We are in need of a new CD player, headphones, and a child friendly center. Students collaborate and communicate with each other to start the listening center each day. The teacher is working with her guided reading groups, so it is important that the center is easy to use. Each week we will change out books so that new vocabulary and literacy skills are built. This center models fluency and builds new vocabulary in an engaging and fun way. Many of the stories I like to read are classics and have a message that help students understand story structure and sequencing. Students always rate each story and complete a record sheet to tell about what they learned. My classroom budget isn't large enough to buy one, so I would greatly appreciate a generous donation to our project!
