My students need a renewable energy kit, classification kits, weather centers, stream tables and other resources.

My school is a Title I school in an under-served community, with the majority of my students speaking English as a second language. My student come to my science class every day, excited to explore and learn about the world around them. More than 60% of my students are below level in reading and math and receive rigorous instruction with intense intervention throughout the day.
Science is where they are able to be hands-on, figure things out, investigate questions that they have, and take a moment to focus on learning while checking their insecurities at the door.
When reading is your weakness, reading science text to learn about the natural world is not an easy task. Students are able to excel in science, through investigating hands-on, in cooperative learning groups. I see their hunger for knowledge when they start forming questions of their own to investigate and the excitement to learn something new.
These building blocks are necessary for their academic success, in becoming college and career ready. Over 90% of my 87 fifth grade students are on free and reduced lunch and do not have resources at home to reinforce or enrich their learning.
We are excited that part of our project is funded, and are in need of additional materials that will deepen my students knowledge through hands on learning. We would love to compare the life cycle of a frog with our butterflies, and also view the life cycle of other animals that we do not have access to bring into the classroom. The block life cycles are a great model to show the changes from stage to stage in both complete and incomplete metamorphosis.
The books on classifying living things are below grade level, which will allow my students to read for content easily without getting frustrated.
With books about Earth’s resources, my students will be able to preview content before exploring rocks and minerals as well as natural resources that can be used as an energy source. They will be able to explore renewable energy rather than just reading about it with the renewable energy kit and the solar cell with motor. This will allow them to see the energy transfer. We have great rocks I have collected over the years for my students to study, but sedimentation is a difficult concept for them. The sedimentation tubes will allow them to visually see the process as they watch the particles settle over time. They will be able to demonstrate the process of erosion on the erosion tables. This is a concept that is very difficult for students as it is a process that is easily mixed up with weathering, a process that takes many years. My students will monitor the weather: the wind speed, the temperature, air pressure, and the amount of rain in our area. These are all fundamental skills that they will understand only by using the weather tools.
