Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My scholars shake my hand with a big smile on their 5th grade faces and walk into our classroom every day full of zest, excitement, and curiosity for what they will learn today. I ask them, "Who are we?" and they reply, "A 5th Grade Community!" I want them to know through coming together as a class, developing respect for each other, we will achieve our goals.
I teach at a Title I school in Northern California, where 95% percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
Many are English Language Learners and are working hard to strengthen their English proficiency. They are growing and learning in a community that is filled with hardships, yet each day they inspire me. Their big dreams and goals fill the classroom with hope, determination, and a sense of urgency. I know that for my students, education is the key to being able to CHOOSE THEIR OWN FUTURES, and not let someone choose for them. So we don't do easy in our classroom, we make easy happen through hard work and coming together as a community.
My Project
In our classroom community, my scholars know the importance of sharing ideas, rich conversations, active listening, and collaboration. From weekly community meetings, shared readings, ELA mini-lessons, to math talks, we practice our skills so that we can grow our brains.
With an easel that is easily accessible to my scholars, I will be able to engage each in academic content and social-emotional learning.
This easel is mobile and will allow me to hang chart paper and pocket charts, as well as share new ideas with my scholars. With a new easel, it will support scholars being able to come up and write on the board in order to take charge of their own independent learning.
With this easel, I will be able to develop lessons that are engaging and relevant to my students' lives. Through creating this shared space, each child can construct their own knowledge through actively participating and creating new meanings. Material and content are more accessible and engagement increases. When they are able to read, write, and share their own ideas, they will actively grow into their own scholarly identities.
