Alternative Seating for Optimal Learning in the 21st Century Classroom
My students need alternative seating in the classroom in order to enhance their focus and provide them with choice in how they learn best! Wobble stools, exercise ball chairs, and balance boards will help us immensely!
Our school is diverse with many beautiful cultures represented. My students represent a variety of these cultures and we love to learn about each other's culture and build relationships with one another. We spend our morning meeting building these relationships and operating as a close-knit community. We continue to build a sense of community as we move throughout our day.
My 5th grade students come to school each day eager to learn!
They are wonderful students and I was lucky enough to have them last year as 4th graders! I have watched them learn and grow and I am excited for the year ahead with each of them. They are kind-hearted, curious about the world around them, creative, and enjoy activities that entail voice and choice. They thrive when given the choice and the freedom to demonstrate their learning.
My Project
Our 21st century learning environment will be optimized with flexible seating choices. We tried out some different seating options in the spring and the students shared with me what they thought would help them focus.
Some of the students prefer to stand, some prefer to sit still, some prefer to rock back and forth, some prefer to bounce; each student has different needs!
Because of this, I am trying to add different seating options to our classroom to allow more choice and more movement. With the addition of wiggle stools, stability balls, beanbags, seat cushions, and balance boards, the students will be able to make smart seat choices each day to help match their personality. As we all know, everyone needs different things in order to learn and I want to provide my students with the tools that will help them learn best! This new learning space will allow them to be more engaged, motivated to learn, and focused on the task at hand. Students will learn to take responsibility for their seating choices with guidance from their teacher.
This past year we experimented with a couple of different flexible seating choices and they were wildly successful and helpful. I would like to see choices for all of my students.
