My Students

Our students come from many different cultures and backgrounds creating a school rich in diverse thought. Some students are learning English while others are learning focus skills.

For many of our students the library and classroom are the only place they can read and borrow books.

Their families struggle to find time for everyday matters and few visit the public library. Teachers and the librarian share our love of knowledge and learning through the books we share with our students. They embrace new books with awe and a sense of joy that truly makes my day. Each new world they discover through reading is a revelation to them and means so much to them, that when our book discussion ends they are sad to leave.

My Project

When they see the fine details in illustrations that support text in a book they are bubbling with questions about the story (fiction and nonfiction). They become excited about the world around them.

Using a document camera to enlarge the text and illustrations on a screen enables all students to understand fiction and nonfiction books in a very personal way.

They won't miss subtle details and they can spend more time focusing on plot, character and setting.

When students see themselves in illustrations or text they make the stories come alive and truly retain more information. A love of learning is also a love and understanding of their importance in the world.
