Create, Explore and Tinker...a Makerspace Experience
My students need a center in the library to create a Makerspace. Supplies like KNEX, LEGO Duplos, origami, weaving looms, and much more for successful hands-on STEM experiences.
My school is a low social economic school in the heart of Oklahoma. We strive hard to make our students successful in school and outside of school. Our funds are limited for items beyond the standard curriculum.
At a time when so much emphasis is placed on the weight of standardized testing, my students need more opportunities to learn, create, and discover their passion without the worry of a score or grade.
The library is the hub of the school. All 415 students will visit the library for classes, makerspace, centers, books, and more! They are great students and eager to explore the library. We provide Title l Tutoring for extra support and offer free and reduced-price lunch to the majority of our students.
My Project
These resources will help to build the crafting and STEM element of our library's makerspace. Our school is working hard to integrate STEM and STEAM activities into our curriculum, and our students are responding with interest and enthusiasm.
As a Title I school, many of our students don't have an outlet to build, create and experiment with these supplies.
This project will provide the supplies for students to create a variety of craft projects along with STEM projects. Students will have opportunities to discover new crafts and hobbies that they will enjoy. It will allow students to have fun while using their critical thinking skills to create a product. Students will take responsibility for their learning, motivating them to become independent and lifelong learners.
This will be a unique chance for students to express their creativity through construction. With these resources, I'm planning on having a library center dedicated to inventing, exploring, building and creating. Within this center, they will build on their reading comprehension skills by following written instruction for making origami and looms. The KNEX and Legos will allow students to not only create and build, but video their work in progress or final product.
