This summer my school started undergoing a major remodeling project in which a second floor will be added over half of the building and existing classrooms will be redone from ceiling (half the classroom have no suspended ceilings now, just the roof!) to floor over a two year time period. We have consolidated our two computer labs into just one. It is my goal as technology teacher to use the lab to teach programming to our students to raise their interest in the STEM areas.
We are a Title 1 school with nearly 60% free or reduced price lunch.
We score proficient on Kentucky's KPREP testing. We love our students!
My Project
Students will use Chromebooks and iPads to build programs that will make the Sphero roll across the floor in various patterns or mazes I have challenged them with. The Makey Makeys will enable the students to be creative in using modeling clay, bananas, pencil lines on paper, etc. as input devices using programs they have set up. They might build a game controller out of these materials to operate a video game or they might use fruit as the keys on a keyboard to produce music. The Snap Circuits are a great way to discover how electrical circuits are built and work.
My goal is to make the computer lab experience more interactive for students by using both technology and hands-on materials for STEM education.
The Media Center Specialist and I are working together to design a Makerspace with at least 15 stations involving high-tech and low-tech (building structures with paper cups and craft sticks, a marble track, a ping pong ball roller coaster, etc.) where students can move about the room and interact with the different challenges given at each one. The items I am asking for in this project will give us more high-tech stations for students to learn and enjoy.
