Fit to the Beat

My students need 32 sets of yoga balls/stands and drumsticks to support our fitness goals and help meet our wellness standards.

My Students

Our diverse campus is one of the largest in our district. We are a full Title I school with a significant portion of students enrolled in our bilingual program. This year’s data reveals that more than 64% of our students are considered at-risk and receive free or reduced lunch. Much of the resources at our school are focused on low-performing students; however, with new accountability guidelines including growth of achieving students, we realize the need to push all our students so that they can excel to the next level.

Despite all the challenges and obstacles that lay before our kids, we hope to provide them with an opportunity to learn about proper nutrition, goal setting, and fitness.

My Project

As a previous classroom teacher, I often observed students spending the majority of their day in the classroom inactive, stressed, anxious, and struggling to maintain engagement through the duration of time. As a new PE teacher, I hope to offer new opportunities for students to release some "bubbled up" energy while allowing for a more sustained focus when they return back to the classroom.

Fit to the Beat will enable students to be active participants that will foster a clearer focus when they return to the classroom.

Research shows that certain types of music can actually make the brain more receptive to learning especially when physical activity is paired with mental exercise. Through Fit to the Beat, all students will work on fine motor skills, coordination, spatial awareness and ultimately have fun!
