Many students find solace and strength in the pages of a good book. Sometimes they are able to bond with characters they read about, especially when books contain characters that reflect who they are as individuals. They can read about the way a protagonist thinks, feels, and interacts with others in the story, and, by doing so, they form connections that might help them learn more about themselves and others.
We feel strongly that our library collection must reflect the student population that we serve.
We have undergone a full diversity audit to assess where we are in terms of diverse offerings and to determine the holes that need to be filled in order to update our collection. Our students must have access to books that mirror their identities. They need to be able to see themselves in the pages that they are reading. Students also need an opportunity to be exposed to cultures and marginalized groups.
We are requesting funding to update the collection to make more diverse library books available for our students to check out. We have carefully chosen books that reflect our student body demographics. These books have high appeal and relatability. Please consider helping us create a more inclusive and representative library.
