This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at our school are some of the most hard working, engaged, and creative student in DC Public Schools. Their ability to manage rigorous curriculum and explore and expand their own creativity is truly remarkable. In addition, many of our students think outside of the box in regards to their future jobs and opportunities while understanding that that their music education will only serve to enrich and enhance their lives. Students also use the music program as an expressive outlet.

My Project

In the fall of 2018, I started a 6th grade string orchestra with a group of inquisitive, precocious, and wildly talented young musicians. This group of students were learning faster than any I have ever had. We were on track to perform at the DCPS Music Festival at the Kennedy Center. Then, March 2019 happened, and we began to learn at home. You expect me to say we stopped playing at that time, but absolutely not! These students persevered in ways that are truly inspirational. Home visits were made to tune instruments. Family and friends helped keep them going, and we not only continued but students thrived musically.

This group of students are now back in-person already making music.

There were techniques and skills that were hard, if not impossible to teach, during the pandemic. I want to make sure that I do not skip any steps in their technique building so that they continue to play throughout their lives. The method books I'm requesting are a strong way to make sure that they have all the skills they need to continue.
