Sparking a LOVE of Reading With Our Spanish-Speaking Students

Help me give my students who are learning English some popular books in their native language to read at home.

My Students

Our student population has grown in both size and diversity in recent years. Our English Language Learner (ELL) student population is one of the largest growth areas. We now have over 80 ELL students who mainly speak Spanish in their homes. Many of these students, in Pre-K through 5th grade, are new to the United States and many of these families have limited resources at home. These students do not generally have ready access to books at home. Our school library is their main source for reading materials.

Our ELL students are eager to learn and want to immerse themselves in the same books that their peers are reading in and out of class.

They are excited to come to the library at our school and find books that they can read independently. These students visit our school library weekly to check out books. They are looking for picture books, early readers, chapter books, and graphic novels - anything to just READ!

My Project

These Spanish language copies of popular books will be placed in our library collection and available for all students, Kindergarten through 5th grade, in our school. Our school serves over 80 English Language Learners, the majority of whom speak primarily Spanish at home. I would like these students to be able to choose books from our library collection that their peers are choosing.

The library is the center of literacy in our school and these books will help our English Language Learners feel included in our community.

Our current library collection contains mostly outdated books in Spanish. Updating this section of our library will allow these students access to the same books their friends are reading while providing opportunities for them to practice reading in their native language.
