Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Wide eyed and eager to learn, my students actively engage and creatively explore their community as they seek to understand the world around them. My students question, think critically and effectively create solutions to real world situations. They are encouraged to approach challenges with the notion that resilience and persistence are required as well as acquired traits.
Scientist, mathematicians, engineers, writers and more, waiting for the opportunity to interact and absorb all the knowledge I am able to direct their way.
The only question they begin their quest with is, "Can we get started now?"
My Project
We have a comprehensive Computer Science program at our elementary school with the goal of giving our students from Kindergarten to 5th Grade the thinking skills that will help them become proactive learners and citizens. Our program is not just about teaching digital citizenship or learning how to use the keyboard and mouse. It is about showing young students that computers are not just a toy or testing tool, but a powerful means of expression enabling them to be the drivers of creation. Through coding and the engineering design process they learn to face challenges and work in teams to collaboratively ideate solutions. The Adafruit Circuit Playground will be implemented with our fifth grade students taking their programming knowledge to another level. Using Microsoft's MakeCode web interface along with the Adafruit Circuit Playground device students will be able to seamlessly incorporate their mastery of block programming (similar to Scratch). The available tutorials will guide them through their coding journey as they play with the a variety of inputs and outputs that are available on the Adafruit Circuit Playground board.
By donating to our project, you will help advance our students' understanding that learning to code is about acquiring the skills to think logically, problem solve, and think creatively.
Our STEAM lab is dedicated to allowing young learners to explore coding concepts, including algorithms, loops, debugging, and conditionals that will propel them as they grow into the inventors and problem solvers of the future. The Adafruit Circuit Playground has created an engaging experience for young learners by combining Scratch-like coding and simulation on one device taking their coding to a higher level.
