My students need sensory materials to provide an outlet for them to release energy and calm them in a safe space in order to access educational curriculum.
At Centreville we believe that all children are inherently talented and that optimism, hard work, perseverance, and positive relationships will help children to develop their talents to be successful at the highest level. Our staff purposefully creates a safe learning environment that encourages risk taking, goal setting, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. We have a diverse student population and we celebrate our diversity embracing each student as a unique learner.
At Centreville we believe that our enthusiasm for learning, school pride, strong work ethic, and ability to make positive relationships with students, families, and community helps us to ensure that every child loves coming to school each day in a fun and challenging learning environment!
We have a variety of "green" efforts in recycling and energy conservation, and our students take pride in leading efforts to help maintain our outdoor learning spaces. Our efforts were so unprecedented that we were the first elementary school in FCPS to earn the coveted "Green Flag" award from the National Wildlife Federation.
My Project
We are aiming to create a multi-sensory space for students to access during the school day. There will be three areas set up for students to access: 1. Artistic 2. Sensory 3.Calming
This sensory space will be a therapeutic space with a variety of equipment that provides students with special needs and students who need help regulating behaviors throughout the school day.
This space will help these children calm and focus themselves so they can be better prepared for learning and interacting with others throughout the school day.
The materials that have are needed to help make this space a success are: bubble tubes, sensory sand, sensory gel beads, seats, arts and crafts materials (clay, crayola lights etc.)
These materials will be used to help students regulate there behaviors in a safe space and allow them to return to the classroom in a positive and appropriate manner.
Interactive spaces such as these have a positive impact on students. It allows a space to release energy and calm themselves prior to returning to their classrooms. These students are better able to follow directions and spend more time on task this will result in a decrease in negative behaviors.
