My students need planting supplies including fertile soil, a variety of seeds and a grow light kit to compare growing conditions and actively participate in seed investigations.
The students at my school are extremely diverse, racially and economically. Our school is the oldest building in the lowest economic area of an affluent county. Unfortunately, we are consistently overlooked. We have great families who work hard to support their children, but many do not have the extra funds it takes to help a school perform "over the top" in academic achievement. The children here work just as hard to become successful at mastering the standards as the affluent students do, but without the perks of innovative classrooms that are supplied with tools that are a teacher’s dream classroom. Those tools often times aid in making school a place where the teachers and children want to be. I want to inspire my kids to enjoy learning and to give them whatever supplies needed to do that. You can help me do that!
My Project
The students in my community are landlocked. They see more concrete than fields. This project will provide them with the opportunity to see how different growing conditions affects the production of different plants from seeds. We will be able to monitor the difference between well lit planters, un-lit planters, dry planting and planting with drainage. The life cycle of seeds can be an exciting lesson, or un-interesting and repetitive. These supplies take the routine out of learning and replaces it with questions and excitement that may one day lead these students into farming, scientific research, or even gardening enthusiasts in their free time. Let’s plant that seed together. This project may look familiar, as I tried once before to get these supplies in a larger quantity, then I realized that not every class needs the equipment, just access to it! Now the plan is to place the light frame in a centralized location so that all of the 2nd grade teachers can use it.
