My students need a set of exercise balls and wobble stools to replace traditional chairs and provide various types of seating. Baskets will allow student supplies to move with them around the room.

First grade is an exciting year full of many social and developmental changes. I have a very engaged group of students and they love to learn. However, there are times when “teachable moments” are interrupted due to outdated and insufficient materials, that I am using to teach them.
Our 100-year-old school is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural school, serving students in pre-k through 8th grade.
We celebrate diversity on a daily basis and look for ways to create a learning environment that appeals to all types of learners. We are nestled in a south side Chicago neighborhood, walking distance from a large university.
Young children need ample opportunities to move and be active. Flexible seating, such as exercise balls and wobble chairs, allow time for movement.
Flexible seating puts control of how and where students learn in their own hands.
Students choose where they want to sit. Being comfortable allows the student to stay focused on the tasks. They can work with others, share ideas and move around the room.
Moving away from traditional seats also means finding new ways to store student materials, which were once placed in a seat sack at their table. Now that students get to choose where they work and sit, they need a new place to store all of the day to day materials. Baskets will allow students to carry necessary supplies to the places they choose to work.
Bouncing and balancing on the exercise balls and balance stools will increase blood flow to the brain, improve core strength and help young students "get the wiggles out." I am confident that my students will love having an opportunity to move regularly while completing classroom activities. Flexible seating options provide a space for learning, body strengthening and a little play, too!
