My students need composition journals, colorful pens, chart paper and post-it notes for taking notes and writing journal entries daily in Computer Science class for reflection and debriefing.
I will be teaching high school students in grades 8-12 a variety of computer science courses: Programming, Database Design and Management, and Information Technology.
My 120 students come from diverse backgrounds and have varying levels of interest in computer science.
Computer science is such a growing field of career opportunities for students. My goal is to provide them with skills they can take with them into the working world as soon as they graduate.
I teach in a computer lab environment where students have access to work -ready software. My students love working on real-life projects, especially those that involve helping out in our small, local community and I like providing them with opportunities to make connections with business owners in addition to what they learn about technology in my class.
My Project
I would like for my students to hand write journal entries on a daily basis in order to unplug, even for a portion of their 90-minute class time. Students spend a large portion of class time seated, in front of a computer.
Computer science students will write daily journal entries in composition notesbooks using colored pens based on topics we study.
The journal entries may be warm-up exercises, reflection, or debrief exercises for students to think about what they have learned in class. Chart paper will be used for group collaboration projects, as will the post-it notes. By implementing this type of learning activity, students will have an opportunity to formulate thoughts about what they have learned!
