My students need flexible seating options [such as Exercise Balls, Bean Bag Chairs, and Wobble Stools] that will allow them to remain actively engaged in the classroom.
My students are happy, energetic third-graders with a strong desire to learn in different ways. They love to break away from the standard teacher directed lessons, and learn through guided hands-on activities and independent exploration.
Third grade is a year of great growth, both in academics and maturity.
When the students enter the year, they are young and need lots of support from the teacher and parents. My goal for them when they leave my class at the end of the year is for them to be independent learners.
My Project
Advancements in technology have given students a wealth of information at their fingertips. In a matter of minutes, students are able to research a topic, watch corresponding videos, and create presentations. Life has never been more efficient. Unfortunately, this increase in the speed of life has aided in decreasing students' attention span in the classroom.
One way to help increase student attention, engagement, and motivation in the classroom is through flexible seating.
Flexible seating gives students a choice as to where and with whom they would like to sit in the classroom. In addition, flexible seating offers the students alternative seating options beyond the standard desk and chair. Flexible seating includes all sorts of fun seating areas, such as bean bags, camping chairs, wobble chairs, yoga balls, and tables of varying heights. Research shows that flexible seating in the classroom improves classroom engagement, on task behaviors, motivation, improves focus and attention, increased burning of calories, uses up excess energy, and it increases core strength and posture. This is the kind of classroom I would like to have this year.
