Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from many countries, and all 10 of the students in our new First Lego League, Jr. after school club speak a language other than English at home. We are a Title I school and last year we earned our AdvancEd STEM School Certification.
This year, we want to make the First Lego League, Jr experience available to our 6-9 year old students in two girls groups and one boys group of 8 students total.
We'd like to extend hands-on learning, direction following, and extend math learning by giving the students in First Lego League, Jr. the cooperative experience of We do.
My Project
Students love LEGO. Kids love hands-on. Kids love STEM activities and develop 21st Century Skills in the early grades by participating in a cooperative-competition called First Lego League Jr. The kids on the team work through a series of STEM projects in the familiar colorful step-by-step LEGO directions format. The process is as important as the finished product. Yet, the end project includes basic machines, motors, three dimensional thinking, problem solving, and basic coding.
The FLL, Jr cooperative competitions build self confidence, team work, experience in following directions for builds, creative problem solving tied to real world problems, and finally public speaking and presentation skills.
These two WeDo 2.0 kits will give our girls team and our boys team the opportunity to compete in the 2017-2018 "Aqua" problem. This kit is required for competition. We will add these two kits to our school's already existing older LEGO Education sets.
