Kindness Begins With Me! Respecting and Appreciating Our Differences
Help me give my students vibrant stories that will guide them to have a deeper understanding of others by promoting equality and inclusiveness. These books encourage students to combat prejudice by respecting and appreciating our differences.
"Our school is committed to high academic standards and believes that learning is fun! As we prepare the “children of today for the world of tomorrow,” we strive to meet all the needs of our diverse student population through a gifted track, exceptional programming, remedial grouping, varied instructional methodology, data driven decision making, and the infusion of 21st-century skills, arts and technology. Teachers work together in an open spaced environment to create an exciting, integrated curriculum that supports both academic and social needs. Students are taught to be creative problem solvers, collaborative thinkers and caring individuals who will contribute to the community and world at large."-school vision statement.
My first graders arrive each day excited for a new learning adventure!
Their natural curiosity, positive attitudes, and endless energy are a teacher's dream class. Our school serves an ethnically diverse student population with 60% of students coming from low-income homes.
My Project
Books are a powerful source of learning. Research shows our brains love stories! We remember content better when it is told to us in a story format. We then connect that content to our own lives and use this information to solve problems or reach our goals. The books requested in this project are written to inform children about world cultures, develop empathy, and appreciate our diversity.
By celebrating notable days and listening to others tell their stories in books, students are learning that everyone deserves respect.
Listening to these books read aloud and engaging in meaningful group discussions will promote connections among classmates and provide new perspectives on topics. Being part of a classroom means learning to get along with each other. An appreciation for diversity is an important start of that learning. We want to celebrate our identities and learn about those of our friends. "And when curriculum reflects the faces of all our people, educators better prepare students to become productive citizens in the global society we all share."
