I teach at an advanced school for high-achieving students. All students are working at least one grade level above their actual age. Our students are a melting pot of nationalities, religions, and economic levels but they all share a love of being challenged and learning new things.
Excitingly, the students challenge me as a teacher, to continuously deliver advanced topics that broaden their knowledge base, in addition to their horizons.
The program we are developing will assist in delivering more knowledge to them, as well as more options for their futures.
My Project
For 9th graders, diving into 10th grade geometry, being able to "touch" the mathematical operations helps the students to discover angle bisecting and Pythagorean Theorem proofs. "Showing their work" will be tangible through a series of simple Origami projects focusing on polyhedrons.
With Origami, the students can see the angles, make them, touch them, and then use their own creations to reinforce geometry topics.
This will not only help with discovery, study, and reinforcement, but will allow them to connect geometry to both previously learned topics and future math skills. While the goal of this project is to encourage the students to develop interest in geometrical discovery, an additional benefit is that it is an "unplugged" activity.
