Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from all neighborhoods in our diverse city. We are a large comprehensive Title I middle school. My students speak Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, Samoan, Korean, Japanese, Danish, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Urdu and Arabic. 58% of students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 15% are English learners. Students are eager to learn from and with one another.
“As a classroom community, our capacity to generate excitement is deeply affected by our interest in one another, in hearing one another’s voices, in recognizing one another’s presence” -bell hooks.
As middle schoolers, my students are at a crucial stage of their education. The experiences they have in middle school may determine how invested they are in their education for years to come, which is why I seek to create as many positive and rewarding experiences for them as I can in my classroom. My students are ready to take on new challenges and build the skills they will need in high school and beyond!
My Project
In my science classroom, I emphasize learning through inquiry, which means that students are motivated to learn as they are generate their own questions and predictions about phenomenon which they investigate using the science practices as described by the Next Generation Science Standards. I am surprised every day by my students' incredible capacity to explore and explain their world! I strive to bring my students' many unique voices into the classroom by providing them with opportunities to creatively express themselves through their science learning. Through giving space to their diverse and equally valued contributions we can come closer to creating an ideal learning community where students are rewarded for taking risks and exploring the scope of their creativity. To create authentic scientific illustrations, students need access to specimens for observation, Animal Kingdom sets I and II, which have a total of 32 preserved organisms in resin.
Students of San Francisco should have the opportunity experience the same kind of interdisciplinary cross-pollination that has allowed the social, artistic, and technological movements of the Bay Area to thrive.
Many artistic skills are useful and applicable to science learning. For instance, careful observation of details is highly useful in both science and art. Visual communication is crucial to representing scientific ideas and modeling science concepts. My students deserve to have access to high-quality art supplies, including oil pastels and water colors, to create beautiful scientific art they can be proud of. We will use the clipboards and high-quality paper to travel outdoors and make drawings from field observations of the garden and parks surrounding our school. They will develop in their confidence as science learners and artists as they expand their definition of what it means to do science!
