I have always felt lucky that I have taught students with a range of backgrounds; backgrounds that make a grown adult jealous and backgrounds that make that same adult challenged to sleep at night. Regardless of their advantages or disadvantages I count on and challenge my students to rise to the occasion and tackle challenging concepts for middle school. In my classroom, we don't shy away from topics that one might think a 12-year-old can't learn about! Instead, I embrace their interests, their passion, and their curiosity and challenge them to take action based on their interests.
A lot of things get in the way of what I imagined to be the beauty of teaching students reading and writing.
My students and I rely on each other to see past the massive amounts of red tape and focus on what is important.
My Project
As a leader within my school, it is my hope to be able to bring back practices, connections, and readings that I can share with my colleagues. Through this process not only will my students benefit, but the students in all three grades and all fifteen English classes will be impacted.
We can only guarantee that we are actually preparing students for the future if we are putting the time and energy into preparing ourselves!
This type of professional development is typically only offered and funded for upper administration in many public school districts, but a teacher in the classroom would be able to best spread the practices and tools!
