My students need flexible seating that allows them to quickly group and regroup as they collaborate with each other. These stools, chairs, and balance balls will allow them to form circles efficiently and quietly.
My fourth graders love to read and share their stories. Each has taken on the 40 book challenge. All 21 students have pledged to read 40 "just right" books across ten different genres before the end of the year. They write weekly letters about what they have learned in their stories, create blogs to discuss books with their peers, and post advertisements of their favorite books in the classroom.
The students in my classroom thrive on collaboration.
They actively listen and build upon others' ideas. My students are given the freedom to group and regroup to complete tasks throughout the day. They are problem solvers in all subject areas. Students support, encourage, and care one another in my student centered classroom.
My Project
My students are truly 21st century learners. They are motivated to not only do their personal best, but to also help their classmates learn from them. Thus, if one child has an idea that he/she thinks would be beneficial to others, they call out a "Give Me Five." The class briefly pauses, listens, and children may reshuffle their groups to learn more from that particular student.
Children learn best when they are given the time to actively listen, discuss, and teach each other.
The stools, balance balls and floor chairs will allow my students the freedom to quickly regroup to other locations in the classroom. Little time will be lost in these transitions. Research has also proven that flexible seating improves students' core strength, increases oxygen flow to the brain, and increases student engagement.
