My school year has been amazing so far! I have a lot of 6th graders who love to read and want more access to more books!! I have a lot of changes happening around me and I want to start this new school year off with some excitement for my 6th graders! R. is a very small community in Eastern NC and the resources are limited. I successfully got my class 5 chromebooks to use for research and to give them internet access when needed, but technology is not the only thing that is important for 21st century learners. I think that reading is the key to doing well in any subject. Comprehension of written materials is a necessity in school and life. I want to help my students become better readers!
My Project
Every year I make it a goal to spend a lot of time using different texts to teach students tolerance of others. This year they will explore African American history in the United States, genocides of the past and those less heard about in the present, and The Jewish Holocaust.
Seeing students react to the unspeakable things that happened throughout history shows me that we have great hope for our future leaders and we have a group of wonderful individuals who want to treat everyone equally and live peacefully.
The novel I have chosen to read with my students is called, "Number the Stars" and it tells the story of a girl growing up in Denmark during the Jewish Holocaust. I love this book especially because it shows what you can do even if you aren't the person directly affected by the the hate that surrounds you. Annemarie isn't Jewish but her best friend is. Denmark fought back against the hate of the Germans. This novel is a wonderful example of standing up for what you believe in and helping those in need!
