Help me create a safe, happy, and engaging classroom for my sixth grade students! My students are 100% English Learners. Many of them are refugees who have had interrupted schooling and are several years behind grade level in reading. They are hardworking kids who love to learn. Each year, it is a joy to watch them discover their love of books as they learned to speak English and read at the same time.
Since most students don't have books at home, our classroom library is a place for them to learn about the world as they experience history, travel to imaginary lands, and journey through adolescence along with their favorite characters.

My Project
My school is located in City Heights and the majority of my students are refugees from all around the world. One hundred percent of my students qualify for free and reduced price lunch. Many students are unable to buy basic school supplies such as pencils, papers, glue, and markers. This can lead to a stressful experience for students and their families as they make the transition to middle school.
Sixth grade is their first experience with middle school, and I want to help the year start positively by making sure everyone has access to contemporary and age appropriate reading materials.
These materials will allow students develop their reading skills and develop a love for reading. For students at this age it is important to reinforce literacy skills and a love for reading. By offering students a variety of reading materials it allows students to grow in their development of the English language.
