My students need a class set of ukuleles so that we can accompany our singing with chords, and continue to learn about the relationship between the chord and the melody.

My Students

I teach in an elementary school with a very diverse population of students. Some are from immigrant families, some have severe special needs, some have internal struggles that cannot be seen from the outside, some are typical children you love to learn.

Even though many of them come from vastly different backgrounds, in my music classroom, they can all communicate with each other.

The students love to sing and play instruments, play simple circle games, and dance to a wide variety of music. Making music with my students is a joyous activity that makes me happy every day.

My Project

When I give my students instruments, their eyes light up and they squeal with excitement. Everything we learn in music class comes together when we play instruments.

Having ukuleles to play in the upper grades will be an engaging way to enhance my curriculum, and provide a bridge between the concepts we are learning in class, and the pop music they hear on the radio.

Rock music will become demystified, and the students will learn that at its core, pop tunes are just like the folk songs we learn in class. They will feel a sense of accomplishment like no other when they learn to play these instruments.
