I truly believe that I have the best students in the world! They work so hard every single day to be not only the best they can be academically and athletically, but also they challenge themselves every day to be better human beings. We have a strict "no bullying" policy in our school which our students take very seriously and inclusion is just a second nature to them. This is what makes them so special.
My students view others with their hearts and judge them on the content of their character not what type of car their parents drive or what neighborhood they live in.
We have many special needs students within our walls and I have never seen them treated any different than any other day to day student by their peers. They are friends and are included in all activities in the classroom or on the playground. It's a beautiful thing to witness and they inspire hope for our world's future.
My Project
Not only am I an educator, I am also the Middle School Volleyball coach at a small but fierce public charter school. As a woman coming from a sports background myself, I know the importance of sports in a child's life. It isn't just about finding a hobby. Being a part of a team builds values and character that are essential to a child's development into adult life. It teaches them resilience, hard work, dedication and perseverance.
Having new basketballs and volleyballs would open up a brand new world to these children.
They aren't use to seeing their school colors represented on equipment (which in our gym have mostly been hand me down) and the pride that comes with playing with "your" colors. Some of them don't know the feeling of playing with a brand new basketball and how confidence can grow just by feeling that soft leather.
We are a small school and our sports program is still growing, but the middle school girls and boys pour their hearts into each practice and each game. They inspire me to be a better version of myself everyday on and off of the court. It would be nice to be able to give them the tools that they need so they can be as successful as possible.
