iPads for Mini Learners

My students need two iPads to film life cycle projects and to extend our science curriculum.

My Students

My second graders are bright, enthusiastic learners. We start each day with a smile and get right to work. We are lucky to have a district and principal who value technology and see the importance and benefits of using it at school.

As in any classroom, my students display a wide range of abilities.

I want to keep them engaged at their individual levels, but it can be difficult, especially for my advanced students. With the right technology, I can push them to go beyond the regular assignments and increase their knowledge and critical thinking skills.

I am taking classes for my technology endorsement, and I am learning a variety of ways to integrate it into my daily lessons. I have seen that when I include technology in my lessons, my students’ engagement level increases tremendously. The iPads will help my class take their understanding of concepts I teach to a higher level.

My Project

I plan to use the iPads to increase science comprehension in areas such as life cycles, outer space, and weather. Students will work together in cooperative learning groups to make a presentation of the concept we are studying. They will collaboratively write and publish it, using visuals and narration. They will use the iPads, with protective cases, and the an app to film their lesson. Finally, they will share it with the class, which should boost their self esteem and increase comprehension for all students.

One of our science standards in second grade is for students to communicate effectively using science language and reasoning.

Having iPads will give my students a hands-on opportunity to communicate with others and to show a higher depth of knowledge. Not only will it help their science comprehension, it will also advance their technology skills, which is a necessary part of their future.
