There is a need to continue to experience the clay art tradition established at our school. Our students tend to be very creative and love to use ceramic clay to work out their ideas in form. Our school is in a low-income, rural community serving Native American, Hispanic and white families living in a large, spread out region well away from urban facilities. Few resources are available to us, and I have found that there is a real love for ceramic art experiences that our students thrive upon. Therefore, my efforts are intended to raise student morale and well-being by introducing and continuing the ceramic art lessons they have come to depend upon as an enjoyable, educational and fulfilling experience set within their own school community.
My Project
Our students live in a technologically-advanced world, yet require the fine arts education of the humanities to become well-rounded individuals. Clay is fundamental for expressing design and meaning in a three-dimensional form. As their primary fine arts educator, it is my responsibility to provide the students of our school the means of artistic advantages that allow them full expression using the kiln. To realize the completion of a clay project from modeling to glazing and then to firing, our students can progress through the steps of imagination and design, to actualization with a fired, permanent piece of art. Grades K-12 will benefit here.
